Walking Step by Step When You Cannot See the Way

Have you ever had one of those days when everything feels like a hill? Not just a little speed bump—but a steep, heart-pounding, breath-stealing climb that makes you want to quit before you’ve even started?

That’s exactly what I faced on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I share about THE DAY I nearly lost it all on the trail in a recent Mom~2~Mom Mentoring Podcast. But today, I'm going to talk about the day after.
The choices...
The terrain...
The challenges...
That day, the day after, Craig and I set out for another long walk, and of course… more hills.
Losing My Sunglasses and My Sight
As we traveled along what was lovingly called "The Yellow Brick Road," which, in case you were wondering, does NOT lead to OZ, I noticed I had lost my sunglasses somewhere along The Way. And wouldn't you know it, the wind started to increase and seemed to have something against me that day as it whipped dust and debris into my eyes.
Here was the choice I had to make because of the challenge of the terrain. Had we been in the closed confines of a village or wooded area, I would have been protected; unfortunately, this day, the day after THE DAY, we would be walking on the open highway.
I made a choice to press on, and figure out how to walk the walk while keeping the dust out of my eyes. So, I pulled my hat down low and asked Craig to walk just ahead of me. I couldn’t see the path—only his feet—and step by step, I followed.
It wasn’t easy. Cars zoomed past as we walked along the highway, and it was frustrating not being able to see where you are going, but I kept thinking of that passage in the bible,
"And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them". (Isaiah 42:16)
And the really cool outcome, oftentimes I didn't know we were ascending a hill until we were halfway up because I couldn't even SEE the hill. I was just focusing on the feet in front of me.

The Gift of Guidance
That’s exactly what Craig did for me on that windy road—and it’s what Jesus does for us. Even when we can’t see the big picture, He faithfully guides step by step.
The Final Climb to the Castle
Our last hill of the day led to a castle perched high above the sea in Baiona, Spain. Beautiful, yes—but steep, grueling, and awe-inspiring.
This time, though, I chose a different posture. I didn’t rush, didn’t compare, didn’t complain. I simply kept going with a better spirit than the day before.
When I reached the top, the reward wasn’t just the view—it was the progress in my own heart. Sometimes the real victory isn’t conquering the hill. It’s the way your heart stays aligned while you climb.
Embracing the Hills of Life
Friend, I don’t know what hill you’re facing today. Maybe it’s parenting challenges, marriage tension, career stress, or a season of transition that feels overwhelming.
Here’s the truth:
You don’t have to see the whole path—just follow Jesus’ footsteps.
You’re never lost—He will always complete what He started in you.
The greatest win isn’t reaching the top, but keeping your heart posture steady along the way.
Psalm 121 reminds us:
"I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth."
Your help is secure. Your guide is faithful. And step by step, you will make it up the hill.
